Pride permits the promotion of the self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and increased visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ+) people as a social group. The term ‘Pride’ is used as it is regarded as the opposite to shame and social stigma and is the predominant outlook that underpins LGBTQ+ rights movements.
Celebrated in the month of June, Pride commemorates the Stonewall riots that took place in the USA in 1969 – changing gay rights for a lot of people in America and around the world. Today, Pride is a celebration of people coming together in love and friendship.
