Wimbledon Fortnight Begins Today

Simply known as ‘The Championships’, the All English Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon has hosted the event since 1877. One of the four grand slam tournaments, Wimbledon is now the only one to be played on grass – with the French Open, American Open and Australian Open all played on alternative surfaces.

People may know that Fred Perry was a British tennis player who, famously, won Wimbledon three times (1934, 1935 and 1936) – and whose branded polo shirt became a fashion classic. However, the polo shirt for tennis was actually created by another Wimbledon winner, Rene Lacoste – who won Wimbledon in 1925 and 1928. Incidentally, Rene Lacoste’s nickname was ‘The Crocodile’ because of how he dealt with his opponents – and that is why the crocodile is incorporporated into the Lacoste logo today.

Who do you think will win the tournament this year?
